El Canton Restaurant in Katy, TX | Firewood Pizzeria
Unique Firewood Pizza Oven
El Canton Restaurant is located in Katy, Texas. Dining patrons can watch their custom pizzas being prepared and then baked in a wood-fired oven that was brought all the way from Guadalajara, Mexico to this location. The oven weighed in at a whopping 5000 pounds!
Located near the entrance door, piles of wood surround the pizza oven. Empty pizza boxes are ready to be filled and delivered to customers after their orders are placed. It is fun watching the crusts being rolled out and then dressed with the different toppings.
My husband and I first visited El Canton because of obtaining some Groupon coupons. It is a great way to discover and try new places. Because of the unique oven, we ordered pizza on our first visit.
Similar to complimentary chips and salsa in Mexican restaurants, bits of seasoned pizza crust are brought to each table. Two different and tasty sauces can be used to top them if desired.
Our Favorite Pizza
Their Luna Verde is a pizza that we both agreed is delicious. It is worth a visit to this restaurant if only to get to taste that particular pizza. The hand-rolled crust is covered with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, spinach, cream cheese, goat cheese and swirls of pesto. Yummy! So far it has remained our favorite of the ones we have tried.
There are many different types of pizza from which to choose and people can design their own from a list of ingredients. Gluten-free crusts are also available.
If you are making pizzas at home you might like to have some of these handy utensils on hand.
This restaurant offers both Mexican and Italian foods. The decor is also unique with some Polynesian influences. According to what I read on their Facebook page, travel experiences to the Pacific islands of these restaurant owners inspired the decor. Surfboards are on display as an example.
Food Choices in Addition to Pizza
The hand-breaded squid was good with a spicy marinara sauce as an accompaniment. If overcooked it can get quite rubbery. The cooks at El Canton fried it to perfection.
The chicken wings were delicious. Buffalo, BBQ or Spicy Mango Habanero are the choices from which to choose. Ranch dressing is an accompaniment. We had six buffalo wings and six BBQ wings on our order when we first gave them a try.
We ordered the grilled chicken sandwich one time and the grilled fajita sandwich another time. One’s meat choice along with chipotle dressing, sauteed onion, spinach, avocado, tomato and melted mozzarella cheese is on a crusty ciabatta bun. It is large enough to split between two people especially with the seasoned wedge sliced french fries that accompany the sandwich.
There is also a selection of salads, wraps, plates of pasta, homemade meatballs, fried buffalo mozzarella, and desserts which include a sweet pizza and tres leches. A wide variety of drink choices are available.
Thus far it has been way too hot for us to enjoy sitting outside but the covered patio at El Canton looks inviting. Inside there is a stage where karaoke takes place on Fridays from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. Music is also performed during the same hours on Saturdays.
There are specials almost every day of the week. Families enjoy knowing that kids under 10 accompanied by adults get to eat for free on Tuesdays.
If this is the type of food that you enjoy eating, the friendly wait staff at El Canton will be waiting to greet you! You can see their menu here.
